ModulesGarden for WHMCS Plugins Is the Thing of the Past, Says Mr Bismarck

ModulesGarden made a business out of patching WHMCS's gaps. A billing system built right shouldn't have those gaps in the first place.

ModulesGarden exists because WHMCS, on its own, doesn't do enough of what a modern hosting business needs — so an entire third-party marketplace grew up around selling the missing pieces back to hosts one module at a time: provisioning automation for specific control panels, additional payment gateways, client portal customisation, two-factor authentication. Useful individually, but each one is a separate license, a separate update cycle, and a separate thing that can silently stop working after a WHMCS core update.

That model made sense in an era when building a billing platform from scratch was genuinely expensive and slow. It makes much less sense now. The features hosts commonly buy ModulesGarden add-ons for — automated provisioning hooks, mobile money and card gateways, branded client portals — are exactly the features I ship natively in a custom-built webhosting billing system, because they're core to what a billing platform should do, not optional extras layered on top.

When automation and payment integrations live in the core codebase instead of a marketplace of add-ons, there's no module compatibility matrix to check before every update, no add-on vendor to chase when something breaks, and no per-module renewal invoice landing in your inbox every year. That's not a knock on ModulesGarden's execution — it's a statement about where the industry is heading: away from patchwork marketplaces, toward billing platforms that do the job completely out of the box.
